Understanding Your Path to Become Your Best Self

In order to understand how to become your best self, there are a couple of things that must be addressed. First, you must understand that no two paths are ever going to look the same. Your journey will be completely different than your neighbors, so there is no sense competing with them. The only person you should be competing with on a daily basis is yourself. This is because we are the only person in our minds and in control of how much or how little we are able to commit to ourselves. Making improvements by leveling up 1% each day will help us reach and exceed our expectations and that is worth working towards every day.


Second, you must understand why you are doing the thing you are setting out to do. Before purchasing another book, and another course, and another program, ask yourself, why am I doing this? How is (insert item here) going to help me reach my goals of being my best self? Often times, we get distracted along the way with the shiny objects in front of us that seem to promise us the very thing we wish to attain in a shorter period of time and with success. However, after we are in possession of "the thing", we realize that it wasn't at all what we needed or far off from what we need to become our best self. Don't become averted from who you are meant to be or led astray by the shiny object syndrome. Evaluate and question constantly whether "the thing" is in alignment with your goals and path to success.


In order to determine whether you are in alignment with your goals and on the right path to success, you need to have a clear vision of your future. Where do you want to be in five years in your health, finances, love life, career, faith, and whatever else you desire? Who is there with you? What would you need to have in order to get there? If it is your health, where could you find an accountability buddy to help keep you accountable on your journey? If it is to be your best self financially, where can you make the necessary changes in your expenses in order to meet your goals? If it is your career, how can you find a job that pays more? What steps would you need to take in order to get there? How much time do you have to invest in applying for jobs or prepare for job interviews? Answering some of these questions can be a great way to prompt yourself to truly think about your future and where you want to be at any given timeframe. You just need to have a clear understanding of what it will look like for you. If you begin this process answering some of these questions and realize that they change a month or more from the time you initially wrote it down, that's completely normal. A shift in perspective along the journey is not always a bad thing, it only becomes more evident of what you were meant to be doing in the first place. Most people will know they're still on the right path to becoming their best selves when they naturally gravitate towards what they are most passionate about in life.


Finally, solely understanding your path to becoming your best self is not going to get you what you want in life if you don’t take action to get there. We've all heard the phrase, "a goal without action is just a dream." Sometimes our issues aren't planning and setting goals. Sometimes it's just giving up or starting to do the thing that will get us there. We may do well for a couple of weeks or months and then give up on ourselves before we even see a hint of success. Let me tell you, my friends, nothing is ever promised to you in this life except this very moment. Time is such a precious and invaluable tool that we tend to take it for granted. And when we do realize it sometimes it may be too late. If you want that a new job that pays well, lose the weight you have been promising to lose for years, become the best self you know you can be, you will need to take action. Taking action when you don't want to get up a half-hour early each day to work on you will not be easy. Taking action to apply for those jobs and getting rejection letters will not be easy. Putting in extra steps or showing up at the gym even when you feel like crap won't be easy. But guess what, it's the path every other successful person before you have taken, so don't give up! We all know that whatever it is we are aspiring to do is possible. We see and read about people who are achieving extraordinary things daily. They were where you are today. So we know it is possible. Don't get discouraged knowing this, be encouraged and inspired. Get up each morning giving thanks for being able to see another day. Give constant gratitude for everything in your life and go out there and follow your path to be the best version of you than you were yesterday.
